Enhancing User Experience in Salesforce – a Salesforce Expert Perspective

As a Salesforce expert, you understand that a well-organized user interface can make all the difference for end-users. A well-organized user interface can help end-users to work more efficiently, productively, and confidently. In this blog post, I will discuss some best practices for organizing the user interface for end-users in Salesforce. This blog is the second part of the series. In this first post I looked at the best practices from a business perspective (see here).

Define and Assign User Profiles and Permission Sets

Defining User Profiles and Permission Sets and assigning them to different user groups is an essential step in organizing the user interface. Profiles define the level of access that each user has to data, objects, and features in Salesforce. By assigning Profiles based on user roles and responsibilities, you can ensure that each user has access only to the information and tools that they need to perform their job. This can help to prevent confusion, mistakes, and data breaches.

As Salesforce expert you will normally have access under the Salesforce Administrator Profile, which gives you access all areas. It is important that as part of design we check what the system looks like from the different users perspective. Profiles and Permission sets can be quite complex to work with, so it is important to test what happens when we make changes to anything in the system.

Create Custom Tabs and Apps

Custom tabs and apps can help to streamline the user interface by providing quick and easy access to frequently used objects and functions. You can create custom tabs and apps for specific user groups or departments, making it easy for them to find the tools and information that they need. Custom tabs and apps can also be customized with logos, colors, and branding to make them more appealing and recognizable to users.

Custom Apps are a great way to reduce clutter for your users. Creating a work space based on user needs will make it easier for them to adopt and use the system. When creating custom apps think about the home page and order of the objects. What is the best information that group of users needs.

Utilize Custom Objects and Fields

Custom objects and fields can be used to organize data and make it more accessible to end-users. By creating custom objects and fields, you can tailor the user interface to the specific needs of your organization, making it easier for users to find and work with data. Custom objects and fields can also be used to automate processes and workflows, further streamlining the user interface.

Top tip when you create custom objects, make sure you place it on a custom tab. Otherwise your users won’t see the object!

Customize the Home Page

Customizing the home page is another effective way to organize the user interface for end-users. The home page is the first thing that users see when they log in to Salesforce, so it’s important to make it as user-friendly as possible. You can customize the home page by adding custom components, links, and feeds. You can also customize the layout and theme of the home page to match your organization’s branding and style.

Use Lightning Pages and Components

Lightning Pages and Components can help to simplify the user interface by presenting only the most relevant information to users. Lightning Pages are customizable, drag-and-drop pages that can be tailored to the needs of each user or group. Lightning Components are individual features that can be added to Lightning Pages, providing a modular approach to building custom user interfaces. By using Lightning Pages and Components, you can ensure that each user has access to the information and features that they need, without being overwhelmed by unnecessary data.

Provide Training and Support

Finally, it’s essential to provide training and support to end-users to ensure that they understand how to use the Salesforce user interface effectively. This can include onboarding training for new hires, ongoing training for existing users, and support resources such as FAQs, help guides, and user forums. By providing comprehensive training and support, you can ensure that end-users are confident and productive when using Salesforce.

In conclusion, organizing the user interface for end-users in Salesforce is essential for ensuring that they can work efficiently and productively. By defining user profiles, customizing the home page, creating custom tabs and apps, using Lightning Pages and Components, utilizing custom objects and fields, and providing training and support, you can create a user interface that is tailored to the specific needs of your organization.

As a Salesforce Expert, it’s your responsibility to implement these best practices and help end-users to make the most of the Salesforce platform.
